Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 650 Ukrainian drones were launched toward the capital overnight on 5-6 October; two people were killed and a major fuel storage site burned.

Scale Of The Attack

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 650 Ukrainian drones were launched toward the Moscow region overnight on 5-6 October, most of them destroyed by air defences at long range, with 105 downed on the approach to the capital [1][2]. Ukrainska Pravda reported the attack ran from 20:30 to 05:00 Moscow time and affected Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports [2].

Regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said 185 drones were destroyed or suppressed over the wider region, according to Al Jazeera. Two people were killed and several injured, and a warehouse caught fire [1]. Al Jazeera also reported damage to 47 houses, four apartments and three cars [1]. Casualty counts differed between reports, with some outlets citing nine injured [1][2].

The Oil Depot

The Volodarsk Linear Production and Dispatch Center near Konstantinovo village was reported on fire. The Kyiv Independent described it as the largest oil depot in the Moscow region, about 40 kilometres from central Moscow, handling around 3 million tonnes of petroleum products a year, with pipelines connecting it to the region's airports [3]. The outlet said it could not immediately verify the reports of the strike [3].

Strategic Context

Al Jazeera said the attack ended a relative lull in strikes on Moscow since 20 September and that both sides are intensifying long-range strikes before winter [1]. The Kyiv Independent noted that Ukraine's Defence Ministry said on 4 October that over 51 percent of Russia's oil refining capacity had been disabled by Ukrainian attacks; that figure is a Ukrainian government claim and was not independently confirmed [3].

Al Jazeera also reported a separate incident in which a Ukrainian drone hit a minibus in occupied Zaporizhia region, killing three people [1]. Figures on both sides come from official statements that could not be independently verified.
