Synopsys Signs Multi-Year OpenAI Deal for GPT-Synopsys and Launches AgentEngineer Portfolio

Synopsys has agreed a multi-year deal with OpenAI to build GPT-Synopsys, a model trained to operate its EDA tools, days after launching a portfolio of chip-design agents.

A model built to run EDA tools

Synopsys and OpenAI announced on 30 September a strategic partnership under which they signed a multi-year agreement to jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, which the companies describe as a specialised model optimised to use Synopsys EDA tools to perform semiconductor design workflows [1]. The agreement includes a revenue-sharing arrangement and go-to-market collaboration to make GPT-Synopsys available to customers worldwide [1][2].

The companies say that current agentic AI technologies connect general-purpose models to EDA tools, and that the aim of the partnership is to make frontier models expert users of those tools, able to run them, interpret their outputs and iteratively optimise designs [1]. According to the release, engineers will delegate objectives ranging from power, performance and area (PPA) optimisation to timing and verification closure, with agents running tools, implementing changes and iterating towards verified outcomes for engineer review [1][2].

GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure, will be designed to interoperate with customer agent harness systems and will be integrated with Synopsys.ai and the Synopsys Autopilot platform [1][2]. The companies say customer data is not used to train the model and is encrypted at rest and in transit, and that early technology engagements are under way with leading semiconductor customers [1][2]. No financial terms were disclosed in the release [1].

"Together with OpenAI, we're bringing frontier intelligence to chip design to help more companies develop and accelerate advanced silicon, while maintaining the rigor and trust required for manufacturing success," said Sassine Ghazi, president and chief executive of Synopsys [1]. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, said: "With Synopsys, we're bringing that work to chip design, helping engineers explore more designs and get to a working chip faster" [1]. Semiconductor Engineering listed the OpenAI agreement and the agent launch together as its top story of the week [3].

AgentEngineer agents and the Autopilot platform

Two days earlier, on 28 September, Synopsys announced AgentEngineer, which it calls the industry's broadest portfolio of domain-specific long-horizon agents, covering verification, system validation, implementation, analog, manufacturing, and simulation and analysis [4][3]. The agents are built on the Synopsys Autopilot Platform, which the company says provides orchestration, skills, memory, telemetry and governance for autonomous engineering workflows [4].

Tom's Hardware reported that Synopsys describes a three-layer structure in which long-horizon AgentEngineers orchestrate task agents, which in turn call tool-layer engines that execute work but do not set goals [5]. The publication also reported that customers can choose commercial, open-source or fine-tuned language models and deploy on Synopsys Cloud, their own cloud or on-premises infrastructure [5].

Synopsys says more than 50 engagements are under way, with availability planned for the end of 2026 [4][5]. Fujitsu said it achieved a 10–30% productivity boost in RTL code generation using Verification AgentEngineer capabilities, while Intel, MediaTek, Samsung, TSMC and AheadComputing also provided supporting statements in the release [4]. Tom's Hardware noted that the release's figures of up to 50x faster verification closure and 20% higher coverage were restated from earlier work with Nvidia announced in July, and that the 30% figure sits at the top of Fujitsu's reported range [5]. It also reported that, although Synopsys describes the agents as autonomous, approval checkpoints remain with humans [5].
