Stryker to Invest $400 Million in CMR Surgical and Sell Versius in the US

The medtech group gets an option to buy the rest of the UK soft-tissue robotics maker. The deal was announced on 12 October and trade coverage continued into the week.

Deal Terms

Stryker will make a preferred equity investment of about $400 million (£300 million) in CMR Surgical and become the exclusive US sales agent for the Versius robotic portfolio [2]. Stryker also gains an exclusive option to buy CMR's remaining equity, and CMR keeps leading development and sales outside the US. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions [2]. Stryker's Andy Pierce will join CMR's board [2].

Pierce described soft-tissue robotics as a high-growth adjacency to Stryker's endoscopy and visualization businesses [2].

Market Position

CMR's latest system received FDA clearance last year for gallbladder procedures only, and the company plans to seek further indications [1]. As of early 2026 it had performed more than 45,000 procedures globally [1]. Johnson & Johnson and Medtronic already hold FDA authorization for their own soft-tissue robots [1].

J.P. Morgan analyst Robbie Marcus does not expect the tie-up to displace Intuitive's da Vinci in the US soon, and suggested Stryker may first target lower-cost sites such as ambulatory surgery centers [1].
