SpaceX Speed Cap on Military Starlink Terminals Slows Ukrainian Drones

Ukraine says a limit of about 160 km/h on terminals in motion has disrupted interceptor and strike drone missions. SpaceX had not commented in the reports reviewed.

What Changed

Overnight on 13-14 October, SpaceX imposed a speed limit on Starlink terminals mounted on Ukrainian drones, according to Zelenskyy adviser Serhii Beskrestnov. He said it slowed attack drones and made them easier for Russian defences to hit [1]. LIGA.net, citing Defence Ministry sources, reports that Starshield military-package terminals in motion were capped at 160 km/h without notice to the Defence Forces [2].

Drone operators reported speeds of up to 161 km/h by late Wednesday, which one Ukrainian official said is still too slow to intercept jet-powered Russian drones. The official wants all restrictions lifted [1].

Operational Impact

The ministry said the situation "complicates the operations of UAV missions, particularly interceptors and mid-range strike drones" [2]. Units and vehicles lose connection at speeds ranging from roughly 72 to 161 km/h, and a source in the Airborne Assault Troops said some missions in the Hulyaypil sector were cancelled [2].

The ministry says it is collecting data from units and working on backup communication channels, and is in contact with the US, SpaceX and NATO partners [2].

Political Context

Beskrestnov said the move could not be a coincidence and was linked to the political situation [1]. Musk said on X that the military version of Starlink is controlled by the US military and President Trump. The Pentagon and US Space Force did not immediately comment [1].

The restriction came as Ukraine said it received no advance warning of the first Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv on Tuesday night, though it was warned of three later waves [1]. Trump has said the US has not stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine [1].

UK Response

President Zelenskyy raised Starlink and intelligence sharing during talks in London on 14 October [3]. Britain announced £45 million in surface-to-air missiles for shooting down jet-powered Russian drones, with £10 million fast-tracked for an urgent Ukrainian need [3]. The limits themselves were not reported lifted in the sources reviewed.
