CEO Satya Nadella announced the multi-chiplet Maia 300 accelerator, which Microsoft says delivers 40 percent more tokens per watt than leading GPU-based systems and is targeted for production deployments starting in 2027.
Next-Generation Custom Silicon
Microsoft on 13 October announced Maia 300, the next generation of its in-house AI accelerator family, with CEO Satya Nadella calling it the company's "biggest bet yet on our own silicon" in a post on X [1]. The chip uses a multi-chiplet design with compute dies manufactured on TSMC's N2P process node, a step up from the 3-nanometre technology used in its predecessor, Maia 200.
Microsoft claims the Maia 300 will deliver roughly 40 percent more tokens per watt than leading GPU-based systems and up to seven times the rack-scale token throughput of Maia 200 in a full 96-accelerator configuration [1]. A single rack reportedly packs 27.6 terabytes of high-bandwidth memory and 1.7 petabytes per second of aggregate memory bandwidth within a 167-kilowatt power envelope.
Production and Deployment Plans
Maia 300 is expected to begin production deployments in 2027, with Microsoft planning to scale the broader Maia family to multi-gigawatt data-centre deployments from that year onward [1]. The company has been in discussions with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for more than 300,000 units of the chip, though negotiations remain ongoing [2].
The announcement builds on the rollout of Maia 200, which Microsoft says is already serving production AI workloads including Microsoft Copilot and Teams across data centres in the United States, Europe and Australia [2]. Nadella has said Maia 200 delivers up to 1.7 times more tokens per watt than earlier fleet hardware, and that GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry are expected to run on the chip by the end of 2026 [1].
