IQM Entangles All 54 Qubits on Its Cloud-Accessible Emerald Processor

IQM Quantum Computers said it entangled all 54 qubits of its IQM Emerald chip in a single GHZ state, opening the full processor to cloud users who previously could reliably use about 30 qubits.
Full-Chip GHZ State
IQM Quantum Computers said on Oct. 29 that its cloud-accessible IQM Emerald system had entangled all 54 qubits on the chip simultaneously, using a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, a standard benchmark for large-scale entanglement. [1]
The Espoo, Finland-based company reported a fidelity of 0.515 at 40 qubits without readout error mitigation and 0.516 at 54 qubits with mitigation, above the 0.500 threshold for genuine entanglement. Users had previously been able to rely on about 30 of Emerald's qubits in a single algorithm, IQM said. [1]
Calibration Changes
IQM said the result followed about a year of hardware and calibration work and cut error rates for quantum operations by up to 50%. The changes included an automated state-preparation routine that orders gates to minimise qubit idle time, a revised calibration method, an improved gate set and dynamical decoupling. "Entangling the entire chip means every qubit and every connection between them has to work correctly in the same circuit," chief technology officer Craig Ciesla said. IQM, which is listed on Nasdaq, employs more than 450 people. [1]
