Hewlett Packard Enterprise will fly its fourth-generation Spaceborne Computer to the lunar south pole aboard Astrolab's FLIP rover. The payload is slated to launch on a Falcon Heavy later this year.

Lunar edge computing

The SBC4 system is carried on the FLIP rover under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services programme, with a landing near Mons Mouton expected before the end of 2026. Planned workloads include tuned language model tests, machine learning on camera and lidar data, and the HPL and HPCG benchmarks. [1]

Earth-Moon latency of about 2.5 seconds makes real-time control difficult, which is why the system is designed for edge processing. It uses mirrored Kioxia SSDs totalling 1 terabyte. [1]
